How we evaluate
BrewRanked does not run our own physical lab. Every score you see is built from three sourced, citable inputs — never a guess, and never something we imply without having done it.
1. Manufacturer specifications
Published specs — dimensions, boiler type, wattage, capacity, material, warranty — pulled directly from the manufacturer's own documentation and listing pages.
2. Aggregated verified-buyer reviews
We read through hundreds of verified-purchase reviews per product across major retailers, looking specifically for recurring, specific complaints or praise (not star-rating averages alone, which are easy to game and don't tell you why). Patterns that show up repeatedly — "the steam wand takes forever," "grinder clogs with oily beans" — carry weight. One-off complaints don't.
3. Our scoring rubric
Each product category has a weighted rubric (ease of use, build quality reported by owners, value for the price point, feature completeness). The "Scorecard" bars you see on gear reviews are this rubric applied — not a stopwatch or a thermometer in our hands.
Coffee bean cupping scores
We do not cup coffee ourselves. When a review shows a cupping score or a tasting-note radar chart, it is the roaster's own published cupping data, always attributed by name in the chart itself. We separately verify that the tasting notes match what buyers report tasting.
What changes a score
Nothing except the inputs above — and never an affiliate relationship. We don't accept payment for a rating, and a product with a higher commission is never favored in a ranking. See our affiliate disclosure.
Where this is headed
As the site grows, we intend to add hands-on testing for the gear we rank highest. Until that's true, this page will keep saying exactly what it says today — we'd rather be boring and accurate than exciting and wrong.
